Why You Should Know Your Local Candidates
Written by admin on June 25, 2012A surprising number of people who follow politics are none the less ignorant when it comes to politics on the local level. These voters feel that candidates for President and Congress or for state officials like the Governor are worth knowing, but that local politics is too trivial and unimportant for their close scrutiny.
That is a mistake. While it is true that candidates for Mayor, City Council and School Committee don’t deal with issues of war and peace, national security and international affairs, local political candidates are important just the same. Local politicians are in charge of matters that have a major impact on the quality of your day to day life through such matters as trash collection, road repair, business permits and the public schools.
You will likely never know personally a President or a U.S. Senator, but a City Councilor or School Committee member may be a personal friend or neighbor. In any case they are probably easier to communicate with and to influence politically on a personal level. Therefore local candidates may actually have more of an impact on your day to day life than state or national candidates, so they are always well worth knowing!
